County honors those who gave all for freedom

COURTESY PHOTOS Memorial Day was celebrated at the Courthouse Square in Coldspring with a meaningful program and attended by family and friends of those who gave their lives in defense of our country. Charles Ballard took many photos of this occasion, and I took one of him working hard to cover this event. One very emotional moment was at the end when Jessiah from Magnolia School, played Taps, she did a wonderful rendering. American Legion Post 629 opened the ceremony with the MIA “Empty Chair” and Flag Ceremony and handed our red flower emblems in memory of those loved ones. The weather was kind and afterward a reception was held at the Post in Camilla. •The Republican Party from our county sent delegates to San Antonio for the Texas Convention, where the elections of the Chairs of the parties throughout the state were voted upon. The family of Lt. William E. Copeland received several awards from San Jacinto County in remembrance of his sacrifice at the Battle of Leyte. PHOTOS BY CHARLES BALLARD SJNT staff COLDSPRING — Dignitaries and residents of San Jacinto County honored the memory of patriots at its annual Memorial Day observance on May 27. County Judge Fritz Faulkner and Cmdr. Mike Brendel of the American Legion Post 3278 spoke to the gathered crowd, and District Judge Travis Kitchens talked about the Battle of Leyte, which occurred during World War II. In that battle, Lt. William E. Copeland of Oakhurst died. Copeland was the focus of the day’s event. Magnolia ISD student Jessiah Leal blew “Taps” to end the observance.

Trinity firefighters responded to numerous downed trees during last week’s storms. COURTESY PHOTOTCNS staff TRINITY — Trinity Fire & Rescue ended May as it began, dealing with the aftermath of heavy storms. On Friday morning, the Fire Dept responded to a reported lighting strike to the corner of the florist shop on South Robb Street downtown. Damage was assessed and barricades set up to prevent falling bricks from hitting anyone. On May 28, storms brought down several trees, and the department responded to a tree on FM 356 and Skaines Lane. A second tree fell on Highway 19 North at Barnes Switch blocking the northbound lane. TxDOT assisted with removing the tree from the roadway. A third tree fell on Highway 94 near White Rock Creek, and firefighters responded for removal as well.
